We are delighted to share that Killasonna Mixed National School has received a very positive report following a recent inspection of the teaching and learning of Mathematics by the Department of Education Inspectorate.
The inspection found that the overall quality of pupils’ learning in Mathematics was very good, with pupils demonstrating a strong understanding of mathematical concepts and an ability to apply their learning confidently to real-life contexts. Inspectors noted that pupils were highly engaged, motivated and enthusiastic during lessons, and that they used mathematical language competently across a wide range of activities.
The report highlighted the very good quality of learner experiences in Mathematics, with pupils actively involved in hands-on, collaborative and outdoor learning activities. Pupils spoke positively about working together, participating in maths games and projects, and making connections between Mathematics and other subjects such as Science, History and Geography.
The quality of teachers’ practice was described as very good, with lessons carefully planned, well-structured and engaging. Teachers were commended for promoting mathematical language, linking learning to real-life situations, and using a variety of active methodologies and resources to support all learners. The strong collaboration between mainstream and special education teachers was also recognised as a key strength in supporting pupils with additional learning needs.
In addition, inspectors praised the school’s effective planning and school self-evaluation (SSE) processes, noting the commendable work being done to continuously improve teaching and learning, with a clear focus on digital learning, wellbeing and literacy.
