On the 2nd of March 2026 our debate team and our chairperson (Sean) participated in a very tough and intense online debate with Clooneyquinn NS. Well done to Emily, Aoibhe and Aoibheann and congratulations to the victorious Clooneyquinn team. This was a great opportunity for the children to learn public speaking skills and will stand to them in great stand in years to come. We still believe that the weekend should be three days long!
Strokestown House and The National Famine Museum
As part of our studies on 18th-century Ireland and later the Great Irish Famine, the Senior Room visited Strokestown Park House and the National Famine Museum. The trip allowed pupils to see firsthand the contrast between the lives of the Mahon landlord family and those of the tenant farmers we had learned about in class. Viewing original artefacts, letters, and records helped deepen the children’s understanding of the hardships of the 1840s and the impact of the Famine on Irish people. It was a very meaningful experience that brought our learning to life.
Thank you to the organisers of Science Blast for their kind invite to the RDS Science Blast exhibition in Kingscourt Community Centre.
As part of Maths Week 2025, our pupils explored the fun and challenge of Sudoku!
Through Sudoku, the children developed their logical thinking, pattern recognition, and problem-solving skills in a fun, hands-on way. Everyone enjoyed the challenge of completing their puzzles and discovering that Maths can be both exciting and rewarding!
This year has started off in a predictably bustling and busy manner in Killasonna! We finished up for Mid-term with a Halloween Dress Up Day. Things are unlikely to settled down after the midterm so we hope everyone has a restful break so that we’re all ready for a busy few months.
On the 22nd of October, we sculpted Hedgehogs out of clay. They turned out great!
This term, we went to the libary to learn about Biodiversity with Brian Mulvihill. We learned about the local flora and fauna in our area and their importance.
If you interweave the pages of two 120 page copies, it is virtually impossible to pull them apart! All the touching pages create a surface area of 71, 400 sq cm and the friction created in such a small area is immense.
Ukulele
The Senior Room is enjoying the challenge of learning how to play the Ukulele. At the start of the of the year our teachers set up the activity. We started playing it at the start of the year. Gary is our coach and he teaches us lots of cords and songs. He is a very funny guy and we all are excited when he comes in to our classroom.

As part of Science, we have been learning about magnetic fields. Focusing on the concepts of a 'fair test', we devised a procedure to make our own paper clip compass.
We have taken on the challenge of learning how to play Chess and are looking forward to seeing steady progress throughout the year. We may even enter a competition!
