First Holy Communion 2026
First Holy Communion 2026
We extend our warmest congratulations to our wonderful Second Class children on receiving their First Holy Communion. Thank you to Fr. Simon, the parents, families, and parish community who have supported the children. We were also delighted that some of the older children from our school gave generously of their time to sing in the choir, helping to make the ceremony even more meaningful and special.
As the Second class children continue their journey, we wish them every blessing as they grow in faith, kindness, and love, and continue to deepen their relationship with God. Well done Charlie, Senan, Olivia, Kady, Jack and Paddy!
We are delighted to announce that Scoil Bhríde Killasonna NS has been awarded our Green Schools Flag for Global Citizenship: Litter and Waste!
This fantastic achievement recognises the hard work and commitment shown by all of our pupils, staff, Green Schools Committee and wider school community throughout the year. We explored important topics around reducing waste, caring for our environment and understanding how our actions can make a positive difference both locally and globally.
This award is a wonderful reminder that even small actions can have a big impact. We are very proud of all the efforts made by our children in helping to create a cleaner and more sustainable future.
A sincere thank you to Miss Connolly, our pupils, parents, Green Schools Committee and everyone who supported us along the way. Finally, well done to Kady and Senan for representing the school at the awards ceremony.
Everyone at Scoil Bhríde Killasonna NS would like to wish St. Mary's Granard GAA the very best of luck with their upcoming fundraiser, The Jungle.
We are delighted to support such a fantastic community initiative and to play a small part in helping the club continue its great work both on and off the field. St. Mary's plays an important role in bringing people together and promoting teamwork, friendship and local pride throughout our community.
We hope The Jungle is a huge success and wish everyone involved an enjoyable and memorable event. Best of luck to all!

A Special Visitor
A special visitor arrived at our school today as a baby lamb came to meet the pupils. 🐑There was great excitement as everyone had the chance to see and gently pet the lamb. Thank you to parent Charlie Burns for bringing in the little visitor. A lovely experience and a great way to connect with life on a farm!
We had a fantastic day at the DreamSpace STEM Exhibition in Edgeworthstown, where the children immersed themselves in hands-on learning and innovation. From exploring coding and robotics to engaging with interactive STEM challenges, the pupils were inspired to think creatively and solve problems in new ways. The exhibition provided a wonderful opportunity to bring classroom learning to life, sparking curiosity and excitement about science, technology, engineering and maths. It was a truly enjoyable and educational experience for all! Killasonna would like to thank Dreamspace co-ordinator Siobhán Greally for sharing all her expertise and support over the last number of months. We are already looking forward to Dreamspace 2027!
Two teams won prizes so congratulations to Charlotte, Conor, Malachy, Aisling, Emily O'Farrell and Emily Sheehan in their group and to the second group of Finn, Sam, Ruth, Kara, Keeva and Cian. Well done to all the children for working so hard in the build up to the exhibition.
We are delighted to unveil our new outdoor storage unit here at Scoil Bhríde Killasonna. This fantastic addition will provide valuable storage space for equipment and resources, helping to keep our school environment organised and tidy.
We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Granard Men’s Shed, who designed and built the unit with great care and craftsmanship. Their work has created a strong, practical and beautifully finished structure that will serve our school community for many years to come.
We are also very grateful to Lús an Gréine, Granard for their support in bringing this project to life. This collaboration highlights the strength of community spirit in our local area and the positive impact it can have on our school.
As a next step, our pupils are looking forward to getting involved in painting and decorating the unit, making it a colourful and creative feature of our yard.

Ag Damhsa le Chéile – Seachtain na Gaeilge
As part of our Seachtain na Gaeilge celebrations, the children in Scoil Bhríde took part in a lively and enjoyable school céilí. With the help of online tutor Edwina Guckian, the pupils were guided step-by-step through a range of traditional Irish dances including An Staicín Eorna, learning the moves and rhythms in a fun and engaging way. The tutor also shared fascinating information about the history of dance in Ireland, which greatly enriched the experience and deepened the children’s understanding of our cultural traditions. The rooms were full of energy as the children worked together, laughed, and built confidence in their dancing. It was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate our Irish culture and language, and a highlight of the week for all involved.
On the 26th of February, the senior room went to STEMtacular in Ballinamore. A total of 3 projects were entered, ‘The Fall’ , ‘Time to know when to sow’ and ‘Healthy Lungs, Healthy Calves’. All three projects were all based on the recent microbit projects we have been learning about in school. Each one of our projects uses a micro bit to solve world problems. At STEMtacular there were many activities and even a magic show! All of our groups got judged twice in total and we even had a first place winner! So congratulations to Aoibhe, Aoibheann, Ellie Mai and Sean on their first place project, ‘Time to know when to sow’. After a busy day in Ballinamore we got on the bus and all went home.
(Ruth)
On Thursday 26th of February, 4 teams from 5th and 6th class went on a science expedition and me and my team, ‘time to know when to grow’ won a prize for the most innovative project. Our project was about telling farmers the right temperature to fertilize soil so we programmed two microbits (pocket-size programmable devices). One was programmed with a radio signal and a thermometer and the other with another radio signal to connect with the first. When we got there there was barely any room to stand with lots of schools from all over, and teachers and helpers up and down the huge hall that this was situated in. There was also the host or presenter Mark Langtry which was very popular as screams of cheer were echoing from the crowd. We were also divided into groups; group A, group B, group C, and group D to go to the 'Discovery Zone'. Finally at the end of the expedition we watched a quick magic show and left. While on the bus home we found out that we WON! We were all ecstatic as the teacher announced the winning project. And so the next morning we were sent the trophy and four shiny medals.
(Sean Kearney)
We were delighted to welcome local author Bríd Reilly White to Scoil Bhríde Killasonna. As a past pupil of our school, it was a particularly special occasion to welcome her back to share her journey as a writer with our pupils. Bríd spoke to the children about her work, explained how she creates her stories, and encouraged them to develop their own creativity and love of reading and writing. She also introduced the pupils to her new book, The Teacher Who Barked at the Dog, which was greatly enjoyed by all. It was a memorable and enjoyable experience for our school community.
A sincere thank you to Ms Connolly for organising this wonderful opportunity for our pupils, and to our Parents Association who helped spread the word in the local community and kindly provided refreshments for the event.
Golden Pancakes and Happy Faces!
Congratulations to the Granard under 11 mixed basketball team who won the Community Games Longford County Final on the 15th of December. Killasonna was well represented by Emily, Hannah, Maria, Keeva and Cian
Congratulations also to the victorious Under 16 Team in their County Final Win. The team was again well represented by past pupils Aaron, Robbie and Harry... along with current 6th class pupil Finn.
Christmas plays bring a wonderful sense of fun, vibrancy, nostalgia and Christmas Spirit. It also brings an inevitable and inexplicable amount of stress for those organising! So a huge thank you to the children and Ms Connolly and Ms Kearney for giving their time to deliver a fantastic show.
Our Christmas cards turned out great and thanks to the PA for this brilliant idea! The samples of our cards can be found below. Well done to both the Junior and Senior Rooms for their hard work and beautiful designs. Also, a massive thank you to DWM Cards in Roscommon for such a professional and swift service.
As part of 'The Worldwide Day of Children', we were so lucky that Lus na Gréine organised two circus performers (Tyrone and Maria) to come help us learn about and practice circus skills like balancing and juggling. It was very interesting how some children were so co-ordinated and able to learn these skills at ease!
Team Hope Shoebox Appeal
Thank you to all who contributed to this year's annual 'Shoe Box Appeal' ran by Team Hope. It is a very worthy cause and will mean a lot to those in great need. Go raibh míle maith agaibh!
A great team performance saw the Girls crowned League winners this year. We're very grateful to everyone who has helped in putting together an amazing squad of players for both the Mixed and Girls team. It's not luck that creates a crop of players like this, rather it's a long term vision, commitment and fun. Comhghairdeas libh go léir!
Congratulations to the Mixed Team for their performance throughout the league and for their victory in the final against Ballinamuck.
A story comes full circle: Our Past Pupil's book brings joy to the classroom
Pupils and staff were delighted to celebrate the success of past pupil Bríd Reilly White, who has recently published the children’s book 'The Teacher Who Barked At The Dog.'
To mark the occasion, pupils enjoyed listening to 'The Teacher Who Barked At The Dog' together in class. The school hopes that Brid's success will inspire the next generation of young readers and writers in Killasonna.
